Our Keynote Speakers Are Ready to JET SET! Are You?
JET’s Symposium on Economics Teaching is a different kind of conference put on by a different kind of journal.

Many of you have already started your summer breaks, which means we’re just a few months away from JET SET 2024. Today, we are announcing our keynote speakers! But before we do that, this is a friendly reminder to start making your plans to join the Journal of Economics Teaching for our summer Symposium on Teaching Economics from August 1–3 in beautiful Blacksburg, Virginia!
This symposium is open to educators from all levels, from K-12 teachers to community colleges and university professors. Every summer, we host engaging workshops to empower you with innovative teaching methods to enhance your economics courses. Whether you’re presenting or just attending, we’d love to have you as part of our community of passionate economics educators!
Still interested in sharing your insights and expertise? You can submit abstracts for a presentation or a complete session until May 20th. Take advantage of the opportunity to showcase your innovative approaches to teaching economics.
Keynote Speakers
While you get your abstracts polished, let us introduce our two extraordinary speakers who will shape the symposium with their powerful insights:
Thursday, August 1—Opening Reception:
Join us at the University Club in Lane Stadium for the opening reception, where Kyla Scanlon, contributor at Bloomberg Opinion, will deliver an engaging keynote lecture. Kyla is excited about connecting with economics educators and discussing how we can further economics education. She is focused on analyzing the economy with a human-focused lens, as well as providing information for people to understand the world around them. Connect with Kyla on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter/X, and her newsletter.
Friday, August 2—Sessions Kick-Off:
We’ll prepare for our concurrent sessions with a keynote lecture by Thomas Debass, managing director of the Office of Global Partnerships at the U.S. Department of State. His current role allows him to provide thought leadership on public-private partnerships related to economic growth, sustainability, and innovation. He’ll share his view on the importance of economics education and what role we play as educators in shaping the future economy.
